Apple Releases Logic 9

That's what I get for sleeping late this morning! Apple has announced the
new version of Logic Studio (aka Logic 9). Lots of 'flexible audio' type features have been added, as well as new tools for guitarists, and what looks to be a nice upgrade to Mainstage for live performances. But stop wasting your time here, just go check out Apple's page! So are you going to upgrade?

I'd love to, but....

No upgrade for Academic LP8. I can't justify a $600 (CDN) "upgrade" for so few new features.

I love Logic 8. Now I'm looking for a live performance solution. For about the same price, I'd be better to get Ableton Suite and stick with LP8.

Hmmmm.... it's not 64 bit, and there's no mention of Open GL integration for Snow Leopard; I was more than expecting all of Apple's new Pro Apps to be 64 bit after a lengthy discussion about their push for a completely 64 bit experience at a recent Apple course I attended.

Flexible audio is obviously a great addition, but I'm rather underwhelmed by this release as a whole, and no amount of flashy marketing is going to cover up the fact that Logic 8 still has an alarming number of bugs which haven't even really been acknowledged, never mind fixed. This release hopefully squashes a lot of those bugs, but I think to leave Logic 8 the way it is currently is a crime if it is left behind to make room for this paid upgrade, and without Open GL and 64 bit support I feel this is a bit of a damp squib after the initial excitement when I first read about it.

The fact that they're marketing this as being "for musicians who aren't engineers" also makes me worry about the quality of future updates for some reason...

I still think Logic is a remarkable bit of software and I won't be changing my DAW, but this release really doesn't have the behind-the-scenes sparkle I was hoping for considering the imminent release of Snow Leopard. Of course this is Apple we're talking about - they may well have something up their sleeves and are waiting for the new OS to actually be released before bringing out some software updates which will address the Open GL thing. Look at the copy/paste thing on the iPhone - they managed to make that such a massive event when it should have been there from the start.

So Tom, you scoffed at me when I posted as "Kirk fan" back before the WWDC that Apple would most likely release Logic 9 at Summer NAMM. While they missed by a few days, you're still obligated to go out and do the helicopter girl in the front yard as penance (hopefully the guy on the 'scooter will drive by at the same time).

On a more serious note...the System Requirements for Logic 9 state an Intel processor with no mention of PPC support. Looks like this may be the end of the line for <= G5 owners. As the poster above says- bummer if they're making this big a move and not going directly to a full 64bit app.

Yeah, but it wasn't AT NAMM. haha I don't think Apple plans to do any more trade shows period from the sounds of it. Native Instruments just did the same thing. Makes you wonder if there is a future for NAMM and the like. And yeah, I noticed the Intel thing. My laptop is Intel, so I may upgrade that to check it out. I'm especially intrigued by the updates to Mainstage for the next tour.I don't see any evidence of new instruments or anything like that, which is a shame. Not that the ones they have already aren't very good, they're just a bit old. And I agree that I hope this squashes some of those annoying bugs. Especially the processor overload thing when you load up a project for the first time.
